چکیده
We provide a spectrum of results for the Universal Guard Problem, in which one is to obtain a small set of points (“guards”) that are “universal” in their ability to guard any of a set of possible polygonal domains in the plane. We give upper and lower bounds on the number of universal guards that are always sufficient to guard all polygons having a given set of n vertices, or to guard all polygons in a given set of k polygons on an n-point vertex set. Our upper bound proofs include algorithms to construct universal guard sets of the respective cardinalities. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.2.2 Nonnumerical Algorithms and Problems

متن کاملComplexity of the General Chromatic Art Gallery Problem
For a polygonal region P with n vertices, a guard cover G is a set of points in P , such that any point in P can be seen from a point in G. In a colored guard cover, every element in a guard cover is assigned a color, such that no two guards with the same color have overlapping visibility regions. The Chromatic Art Gallery Problem (CAGP) asks for the minimum number of colors for which a colored...

متن کاملCovering Folded Shapes
Can folding a piece of paper flat make it larger? We explore whether a shape S must be scaled to cover a flat-folded copy of itself. We consider both single folds and arbitrary folds (continuous piecewise isometries S → R2). The underlying problem is motivated by computational origami, and is related to other covering and fixturing problems, such as Lebesgue’s universal cover problem and force ...
متن کاملInapproximability Results for Guarding Polygons without Holes
The three art gallery problems Vertex Guard, Edge Guard and Point Guard are known to be NP -hard [8]. Approximation algorithms for Vertex Guard and Edge Guard with a logarithmic ratio were proposed in [7]. We prove that for each of these problems, there exists a constant > 0, such that no polynomial time algorithm can guarantee an approximation ratio of 1 + unless P = NP . We obtain our results...
